Mehreen Baig

Mehreen Baig is a trailblazing British broadcaster and former teacher who is redefining what it means to empower young people through education and media. Born in East London to Pakistani parents, Baig graduated from the UCL Institute of Education and began her career as a secondary school teacher in North London.

Her transition from teaching to broadcasting and presenting began in 2016, when her blog post “Why I’m Not Married” caught the attention of the BBC and launched her into the national spotlight. That same year, Baig appeared in the BAFTA-winning BBC Two documentary “Muslims Like Us”. Baig's empathy, humour and passionate advocacy made her, as The Guardian put it, one of the “stars of the show” whose compassion and bravery "epitomised many of the values we yearn for in our society". Her powerful speech at the 2017 BAFTA Awards and subsequent global speaking invitations – including the Women’s Economic Forum – cemented her as a voice for change.

Baig’s exciting rise continued as she became the face of the BBC’s British Asian Season and was named one of The Telegraph’s most inspirational and powerful women of the year, alongside Michelle Obama and Adele. She fronted bold, conservation-starting documentaries like “Islam, Women and ME” and “Lost Boys? What’s Going Wrong for Asian Men”, the latter earning praise from the Guardian as “informed, thorough and provocative”.

Baig has become a regular reporter on BBC’s “Sunday Morning Live” and a frequent contributor to “The One Show” with a focus on schools and education, and has presented acclaimed series like “Walks of Life”, “Pilgrimage” and “Our Coast”.

In 2021, Baig published her debut book, "Hidden Lessons: Growing Up on the Frontline of Teaching” - part memoir and part social commentary that draws on her decade of teaching experience. It was met with high praise from politicians and writers, including Jeremy Corbyn, who described it as a “wake-up call.” That same year, she began hosting the BBC Radio 4 podcast "The Secret Life of Teachers," offering an unfiltered look at the realities of teaching in Britain.

Building on the success of her social media, Baig launched “Glow Up Your Grades” in 2023 – an online video series and free resource to support young people with their GCSEs in the wake of the pandemic. Quickly amassing millions of views on social media, Harper Collins published the “Glow Up Your Grades” guide in 2024. The guide was shortlisted for Best Education Book of the Year at the ERAs, and the video series won Best Education Content at the Webby Awards in New York, beating industry giants like Microsoft and Sotheby’s.

Today, Mehreen Baig is recognized as a leading broadcaster, author, and educational innovator, celebrated for her commitment to empowering young people and amplifying underrepresented voices across Britain.
